Savennières Roche Aux Moines

1998 - Fruit from mature vines grown on schist with sandstone and clay soils, meticulously sorted. Usually, wines are vinified in steel tanks then aged in a mix of tank and oak casks (around 70% in tank, the remainder in oak).

2015 - Fruit from mature vines only (younger fruit bottled under Berceau des Fées), grown on schist with sandstone and clay soils. Vinified in steel tanks and 70% aged in oak, the rest in stainless steel for 18 months.

2017 - Fruit from mature vines only (younger fruit bottled under Berceau des Fées), grown on schist with sandstone and clay soils. Vinified in steel tanks then aged fully in oak barrels (usually a mix of tank & oak but yields were much smaller in 2017).

2018 - Chenin Blanc from mature vines (averaging 45years) in the highly prized cru of Roche Aux Moines, next to Coulée de Serrant. Soils are schist with sandstone and clay. Harvest is done slowly over a few weeks (5-6 pickings). Vinified in steel tanks then aged in a combination of tank and cask (generally (65-75% in tank) for 12-18 months.

2019 - Fruit from mature vines in the Roche Aux Moines sub-appellation next to the famed Coulée de Serrant. Soils are schist with sandstone and clay. Harvest done slowly over a few weeks (5-6 pickings). Vinified in older barrels and cuve method for 12-18 months.

Tasting Note: 1998 - Orange/gold in colour with aromas of honey and acacia on the nose. Mature but not tired, rich but very delicate, fresh acidity and notes of yellow fruit, honey, and hazelnut, finishing a bit floral — simply classic.

2015 - Aromas of pineapple, pear with cut flowers, fresh herb, and white pepper on the nose. Ripe with vibrant acidity, textured with juicy apricot and pineapple on the mid-palate, finishing long with spice and white flowers.

2017 - Aromas of tangerine, pear, and apple with hints of white pepper, beeswax, and smoked almonds on the nose. Supple and rich on the palate, a juicy fruit core, vibrant acidity, incredible tension, and a lengthy mineral finish.

2018 - Aromas of ripe apple, tangerine, citrus zest, and pear with hints of flint, marzipan, white flower, and beeswax on the nose. Medium-bodied with good richness on the palate, a ripe orchard fruit core, vibrant acidity, great depth and complexity, and good length on the finish with hints of spice.

2019 - Aromas of peach, lemon, ripe apple, and apricot, with hints of honeysuckle, white flower, and chamomile on the nose. Great richness and supple on the palate with a ripe fruit and floral core, fresh focused acidity, vinous and textured, chalky/flinty mineral notes on the long finish.
