Champagne Beaugrand

Montgueux

10 kilometres away from Troyes, Montgueux is a commune in the Aube area where Champagne Beaugrand is located. This is a unique commune where none of the neighbouring villages are part of the Champagne appellation. Vines here were first cultivated in the 12th century but had almost disappeared due to phylloxera. It was after the First World War where the Beaugrand family were the first to replant the hillsides. The family received AOC status in 1927 which was essential for the area. The grandchildren and sister/brother team of Hélène and Arnaud Beaugrand, continue its rich history where the majority of plantings are Chardonnay (which is rare in the Aube,) growing on soils of Upper Cretaceous limestone and clay. Farming around 7ha, vines average 50 years old. Their approach is very sensitive to the biodiversity of the vineyard. Some press grapes are sold to small growers in the area and also are sought after by larger influential houses. In the cellar, organic yeasts are used, malolactic is encouraged for complexity, and dosage is kept minimal with some non-dosé offerings. With her experience in Burgundy and around the world, Hélène constantly seeks to raise the bar by focusing on showcasing terroir through the wine
