Champagne Marie Demets
Gyé-sur-Seine, Aube
It started in the 1950s when vineyard worker, André Brément, started to plant his own vines in the Côte des Bar with a goal to eventually bottle their own wines. It was son-in-law Alain Demets with his wife Marie who established Champagne Marie Demets with the inaugural vintage in 1987. Now Pierre Demets, who succeeded after his parents, currently runs the operations consisting of 10ha of vineyards spread over 14 plots on similar Kimmeridgian soils as Chablis. The majority of plantings is Pinot Noir (over 70%) with the remainder planted with Chardonnay. Vines are managed with a “lutte raisonnée” approach with grass between rows, no chemical weeding, reduction of chemical input, and the preservation of old vines. Equipped with a new winery, Pierre has much-needed space for single plot vinifications and thermo-regulated vats to work with native yeasts. Very passionate, Pierre’s wines are charming with amazing precision showcasing the terroir. He truly believes “the better the vine grows, the more we will be rewarded” and works tirelessly to achieve this.
