Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru

2011 - Charming wines but complicated year - “summer in spring, spring in summer”, very hot again later in summer with a few days of rain at harvest. Smaller yields in general. Fruit from a 0.74ha holding with vines averaging 35 years in Les Chaumes 1er Cru, a vineyard below Aux Malconsorts and La Tâche. 100% de-stemmed fruit, aged in oak with 40% new.

2012 - Spring frost followed by cold/wet early summer. Spells of hail with intense heat in July. Rain near harvest time. Small harvest for most but the quality of grapes that survived were beautiful. Fruit from a 0.74ha holding with vines averaging 35 years in Les Chaumes 1er Cru, a vineyard below Aux Malconsorts and La Tâche. Vinified with 40% whole cluster, aged in oak with 40% new.

2014 - Excellent spring, but a hailstorm in late June reduced yields for some. Tricky summer with hot days and chilly/wet days, conditions improved to be warm and dry in August. Fruit from a 0.74ha holding with vines averaging 35 years in Les Chaumes 1er Cru, a vineyard below Aux Malconsorts and La Tâche. Vinified with 40% whole cluster, aged in oak with 50% new

Tasting Note: 2011 - Fruit aromas of both red & black plum, raspberry with spices, red flowers, and liquorice. Rich, full and round palate with a sappy maraschino cherry, fine tannins and finishes long with bitters spice on the end.

2012 - Aromas of ripe cherry and raspberry with a hint of flowers. Supple and intense fruit also on the palate framed with round but firm tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long with hints of mineral.

2013 - Aromas of red raspberry, black cherry and plum with hints of violets, stone mineral, mocha, earth on the nose. Great concentration and tension on the palate, red and dark fruit core, good line of acidity, firm tannin, mineral & a slight peppery spice on the long finish. A wine with great aging potential.

2014 - Aromas of plums and black cherry with hints of liquorice, violets, lavender. A powerful and lush palate with deep black fruit and hints of spice & herbs, vibrant acidity finishing long with an iron mineral note.
