Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru
2014 - Excellent spring, but a hailstorm in late June reduced yields for some. Tricky summer with hot days and chilly/wet days, conditions improved to be warm and dry in August.
2015 - A mild, wet winter & spring, then a hot dry summer led to some risk of overripe fruit, cooler in late just before harvest. Yields slightly below average.
2016 - Devastating frost in April resulted in limited production for many, challenges combating mildew for some, but a warm dry summer helped to achieve good ripeness overall.
2017 - Warm spring with frost mostly avoided. Hot/warm weather for spring and summer leading to an early harvest. Picking dates are essential due to the risk of rain. A plentiful harvest.
All vintages have fruit from a parcel in the heart (or center) of the Taillepieds 1er Cru with soils of small stones and a clay/limestone base. Vines are an average of 45 years. Some whole cluster use, maturation in oak barrels for 24 months with 10-20% new.
Tasting Note: 2016 - Aromas of spice, red flower, and forest floor expressive first and then cherry, and plum notes. Rich and round, dense with deep fruit on the mid-palate, chalky tannin, fresh acidity, and a long finish with lots of spice.
2017 - Aromas of dark plums, ripe strawberries, and redcurrant with hints of spice, stone mineral. Fleshy and ripe with great fruit concentration, good grip on the tannins, fresh acidity, and a long finish with hints of spice and red flower.
