Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru

2017 - Warm spring with frost mostly avoided. Hot/warm weather for spring and summer leading to an early harvest. Picking dates are essential due to the risk of rain. A plentiful harvest. Fruit from 2 parcels (totalling 0.4ha) closer to the Pommard border with iron-rich soils on a bedrock of limestone. Vine age ranges from 40-70 years. Vinified with 10% whole cluster, aged in oak for 18 months, 30% new.

Fruit from 2 parcels (totalling 0.4ha) within Les Fremiets, closer to the Pommard border. Soils are iron-rich soils on a bedrock of limestone and vines planted in 1950 & 1980. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts without stems, aged in oak for 18 months, 20% new.

Tasting Note: 2017 - A bouquet of raspberries, wild strawberries, cranberry with rose petals, crushed stone. Medium-bodied with pure red fruit aromas, refreshing acidity, youthful tannins, and oak spices linger on the finish.

2018 - Aromas of red & black cherry, raspberry, a plum liqueur with hints of rose petal, cocoa, earth (soil), stone mineral on the nose. Deep and layered on the palate with juicy red/black fruit & spice, fresh acidity, fine-grained tannins, great power, a superb texture and a sappy long finish.
