Champagne Guillaume Sergent
Pure, focused, intense, brilliant, beautifully balanced, are just some words that describe the wines from Guillaume Sergent. In 2008, the family estate which also had its own label was split between him and his brother. While his brother grew and sold fruit, Guillaume with a small 1.5ha of vines, all of which are 1er cru, decided to start his own Domaine in Vrigny. Vineyards are split among 8 parcels in the towns of Coulommes and Vrigny (west of Reims). Farming is done by himself (with the help of a horse) which he says allows for a better understanding of his vines and terroir. Guillaume, a trained oenologist, refers to his methods in the vineyards as “alternative”, decisions are made from good sense and a lot of observation. Preserving the vine's health, terroir, and biodiversity is most important and achieved through balanced use of biodynamics, organic, conventional methods. Natural cover crops are grown, the lunar calendar is followed for most operations, chemicals have not been used since taking over the vineyards. Guillaume refers to his style in the cellar as simple and precise, as he feels it’s the grapes that produce the wine. Fermentation in neutral oak, no additions and minimal dosage. Champagne Guillaume Sergent is still very under the radar but that’s likely to change soon.
