With such rich family history in Champagne, 8th generation Eric Rodez and Mickael (9th generation) have a deep passion for the terroir, which the wines of Champagne Rodez very much reflect this. Based in the grand cru village of Ambonnay, the family began as growers selling to négociants. Each generation added small parcels and also a wine press. Eric was instrumental in transitioning the family vineyards to biodynamics. He created a process that allowed vine roots to grow deeper into the soil, in search of moisture and then reinvigorate life back into the vineyard. It was a long (and stressful) process but Eric fully believed that the soil was everything and was absolutely necessary. Mickael continues this careful work in the vineyards and oversees the 6ha that spread over 35 parcels. Another strength of Champagne Rodez is in the cellar with their reserve wines. In a given year, around 60 different base wines are vinified, most in oak, some in the tank, and some with malo. Having worked for Krug for a number of years, Eric is a master at assemblage. With up to 5-10 different vintages going into the final cuvées, this process is compared to that of a music composer. The dedication and outstanding quality are expressed through the vinous, multilayered, complex champagnes, and as Eric puts it, “every year a completely new symphony is created!”
