August Kesseler
Assmanhausen
Established in 1924 by his parents, the very young August Kesseler took over operations in 1977. Situated in the village of Assmanshausen along the Rhine River, August took a modest 2.4ha winery making bulk wine and grew it to 33ha of vineyards, producing quality wines representing the best of Rheingau. Most of the vineyards are on extremely steep slopes with heat-storing slate soils and good drainage in Assmanshausen and Rüdesheim. August, constantly thinking opposite to what the norm was in the area that time, went back to old vines, low yields, and a lot of vineyard work. Spätburgunder (aka Pinot Noir) had always been a passion. After taking part in the Pinot Noir Celebration in Oregon, the inspiration from other winemakers led August to be the first to sell dry red wine in the region in 1983. Eventually, he became considered one of the fathers of the red wine revolution in Germany. Together with his team, August still produces whites that have the innate power and retains the lightness of touch and stylish, moreish and very pure expressions of Pinot Noir.
