Tenute Cisa Asinari Dei Marchesi Di Grésy

Barbaresco, Piedmont

Tucked away in the Langhe and Monferrato hills east of Alba is home to the most graceful and elegant wines in Piedmont, produced by Tenuta Cisa Asinari Dei Marchesi di Grésy (or Marchesi di Grésy). The Grésy family has owned this property since the early 1800s. It operated as a traditional farm with livestock, vegetables, and fruit, including grapes. It wasn’t until Alberto di Grésy realized the potential of his vineyards, where he began to vinify and bottle his very own wine in 1973. Currently, the 45ha of vineyard land is farmed organically and spans four estates: Monte Colombo, Monte Aribaldo, La Serra, and the crown jewel, Martinenga – an 11.93ha, single-vineyard monopole (with three subsections) in an amphitheatre shape. Respect for the land extends to their winery, where the facilities are entirely underground and use solar panels. Natural insulation provides ideal wine ageing conditions without the use of energy. A large, aromatic garden surrounds the winery to preserve the biodiversity and microclimate. An experimental vineyard nearby is home to 11 different clones of Nebbiolo to study the grape further and the effects of climate change. Alessandro and Ludovica di Grésy joined their father Alberto at the winery in 2013, ensuring the deep tradition and passion continue for future generations.
