Joh. Jos. Prum

Bernkastel-Wehlen

Wines are classic, finessed, exquisite expressions of terroir, and their longevity is legendary! Dr. Katharina Prum leads this iconic estate founded in 1911 by her great grandfather Johann Josef Prum in the village of Wehlen in the Mittelmosel. The family roots go back a further hundred years prior to the estate's founding and the famous sundial being constructed by an ancestor in the villages of Wehlen and Zeltingen. Vineyards span over 22ha, all planted with Riesling, in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube, and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. Vines grow on the famous grey & blue slate soils on very steep slopes and most are ungrafted. During harvest, pickers have 2 containers: one for green, healthy grapes and one for botrytis affected, detailed and hard work especially when done on the very steep slopes. Treatments are minimal and fermentation in stainless steel tanks with only indigenous yeasts. Ferments tend to be slow and wines bottled late, there is no time pressure and wines can to develop at its own pace. They utilize the “Goldkapsel” for some wines to differentiate selections within their Auslese category. A young J.J. Prum wine will often show a youthful “wildness” in its beginning, which is the starting point for the development of great wines and will evolve gracefully with time in the cellar

*JJ Prum does not publish tech sheets as they wish everyone to discover the personality of each wine on its own and not by its analytical data.
